No.  I just bought the Hamilton Beach Retractable Cord 14212 Iron from my local Walmart store and tested it.  There was no automatic shutoff after I left it on for over an hour in the upright position. There was no automatic shutoff after I left in the facing down position for over two minutes.

After using the Hamilton Beach Retractable Cord Iron, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed. The retractable cord is a game changer, as it eliminates the hassle of dealing with tangled cords. I broke down and bought an iron and this iron makes ironing so much easier and pleasant. I love it. I'm waiting for the ironing board to come in now can't wait for that to come I will let you know how that turns out and ironing board and an iron who would have figured I would break down and buy an iron when I've been steaming my whole life steaming my clothes, not steaming at Walmart.lol

I have used the iron to apply T-shirt transfers.  It is lightweight but heats quickly.  The stainless steel heating plate glides smoothly across the fabric and transfer parchment.  The retractable power cord makes implementation and storage ultra-easy.

Lightweight iron. Easy to use. Gets hot enough to put a nice crease in my pants. It doesn't come with a cup though. Thank goodness I hadn't thrown away the cup that was with my old iron.
